Short links vs QR codes: how they fit together

People treat short links and QR codes as alternatives. They are really two layers: the code is the printed symbol, and the short link is the small piece of indirection that keeps it editable.

Two layers, one printed asset

A static QR code encodes the full URL, which is why it cannot change. A dynamic code encodes a short link such as your-domain.com/r/ab12cd, which resolves on the server to whatever destination is current.

  • QR code — the printed, unchangeable symbol
  • Short link — the indirection that can be repointed
  • Redirect — the server deciding where a scan goes

Why it is worth the extra hop

The extra redirect costs a few milliseconds and buys you the ability to fix a printed code without reprinting it — plus scan counts you cannot get from a direct link.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my own short domain?
Yes. A branded short domain keeps the redirect under your control and looks tidier on a scan.
Does the short link slow the scan down?
By a few milliseconds. In practice the scan feels immediate.
Are short links safe?
They are when the destination is visible in the redirect path and controlled by a party you trust — which is why owning the domain matters.
