How to track QR code scans

Static codes cannot be tracked at all — there is no server to ask. Dynamic codes can, because every scan passes through the redirect. That makes measurement a property of the code, not your website.

What you can measure

Because the redirect sits between the printed code and the destination, it can record the scan before forwarding it.

  • Total scans and scans over time
  • Country and region, from network signals
  • Device, operating system and browser
  • Which rule matched, so you can see routing behavior

What is deliberately not collected

Good tracking does not require identifying people. We store a salted hash of the IP address rather than the address itself, plus coarse device data — enough to see patterns, not enough to profile an individual.

One code per placement is the whole trick

A total tells you that people scanned, not where. To compare a poster against a table tent, give each placement its own code pointing at the same destination.

Name each one clearly as you create it, and the comparison writes itself: the menu board against the receipt, the shop window against the shelf edge.

Routing rules can do something similar, but separate codes keep the numbers separate and are far easier to explain to anybody reading the report.

What scan counts will not tell you

A scan is not a person. One visitor opening a lunch menu on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday counts three times, and a code photographed off a screen and opened later counts as well.

Scans also say nothing about what happened next. High counts with no conversions are telling you the destination failed, not that the code did.

Read the numbers as a measure of attention, then go and look at the landing page yourself.

Turning the numbers into decisions

The value is in comparison, not totals. Give a campaign two weeks, then compare placements, cities and devices against each other.

  • Keep the placements that earn attention and reprint the ones that do not
  • Compare iOS against Android before committing to a platform-specific design
  • Check whether the country you expected is the country that scans
  • Repoint a code instead of printing a new one when a destination changes

Frequently asked questions

Can I track scans on a static code?
No. Nothing runs between the code and the destination, so there is nothing to count.
Do I need to add code to my website?
No. Counting happens at the redirect, before the visitor reaches your site.
Can I see which poster was scanned?
Yes, if you use one code per placement. Comparing their totals tells you which materials get used.
Can I tell whether the same person scanned twice?
Not reliably, and we do not try. Repeat scans are counted as scans; the numbers show patterns, not people.
How soon do scans appear in the dashboard?
Within seconds. The scan is recorded after the redirect is sent, so the visitor is never kept waiting for analytics to be written.
