Before you print
Check the fundamentals that scanners depend on.
- Size: at least 2 cm square for close scanning, larger for distance
- Contrast: dark modules on a light background
- Quiet zone: keep the margin clear of other design elements
- Error correction: raise it before adding logos or styling
- Format: export a vector (SVG) and print at scale
After the first print
Test the physical print with at least two phones and in the lighting conditions it will live in — a laminated sign in sunlight behaves differently from a screen.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum printable size?
Around 2 cm (0.8 in) square for a phone held close, scaling up with viewing distance.
Can I print a QR code in color?
Yes, as long as contrast stays high. Dark colors on light backgrounds scan best.
Should I print SVG or PNG?
SVG for anything printed, since it scales without blurring. PNG is fine for screens.
